Compressive Sensing Flash LIDAR

CS Flash LIDAR

PSI is developing imaging LIDAR systems for operation in degraded visual environments with price, power consumption and form factor compatible with deployment from small, unmanned platforms.

Capability Description: Imaging LIDAR based on compressive sensing (CS) providing centimeter scale resolution in the transverse and range dimensions out to a range of several meters in turbid underwater environment. Data updated at 10 Hz rate compatible with operation from a mobile platform. Initial investigations underway to adapt this technology for operation over longer ranges in air through scattering environments consistent with brown out.

Key Features

Comparison of a reference image (left) and range image (right) of a 3D printed spiral imaged through water

Imaging LIDAR capability with the following advantages over more conventional architectures:

  • Intrinsically compressed and encrypted data
  • Ability to dynamically trade spatial resolution, image format and acquisition rate over different mission phases
  • Enhanced ability to reject background and scattered light
  • Significantly reduced size, weight, power and cost

Benefit to Warfighter

Provides the operator with clear, high contrast imagery in highly scattering environments suitable for target detection along with range information to understand target motion and closing rate.
