Capability Description: PSI’s passive case design controllably fractures open, removing pressure vessel confinement, before propellant ignition during Slow Cookoff (SCO), Bullet Impact (BI), and Fragment Impact (FI).
Key Features:
The passive case design employs two key features to reduce the response from thermal and high energy impacts threats.
- Impact induces thermal & mechanical degradation in case material, venting the case prior to propellant ignition
- Heat flux from a SCO event induces reactions within the case material, enhancing thermal and mechanical degradation, and vents the case below propellant ignition temperature.
