Capability Description: PSI’s 2×4 motor (nominally 2″ grain diameter x 4″ grain length) configuration is commonly utilized across the solid propellant community for verifying propellant burn rate in small-scale motors.
Key Features:
- The motor utilizes a cartridge-loaded, thin-webbed, center-perforated grain geometry to ensure pressure neutrality throughout the burn.
- PSI’s existing 2×4 motor hardware was specifically designed to safely support propellant hot-fire testing at up to 5000 psi chamber pressure. This provides a unique capability to measure burn rate in an SRM environment across a wide range of pressures.
Benefit to Warfighter/Customer:
2×4 motor tests generate propellant burn-rate data which is used to predict solid propellant performance in larger motors.
