Aluminum Hydride (Alane)
PSI developed a coating to prevent Alane from losing hydrogen content during storage.
Capability Description: PSI has developed a novel coating allowing for the increased stability of Alane in the presence of moisture. The coating stabilizes Alane and prevents hydrogen loss improving safety during propellant manufacturing, storage and handling. PSI currently generates 10gram batches of coated Alane and is actively exploring additional scale-up methods.
- High hydrogen storage capacity: AlH3 can store up to 10.1% hydrogen by weight, making it a promising material for use in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, propellants and other applications that require high-density hydrogen storage.
- Rapid hydrogen release: AlH3 can release hydrogen rapidly when heated, making it a potential candidate for use in hydrogen-powered systems that require quick and reliable hydrogen release.
- Stability: PSI’s stabilized-AlH3 ingredient improves the storability of AlH3, making it a safer and more practical hydrogen storage material than many other metal hydrides.
- Cost: AlH3 is relatively inexpensive compared to some other hydrogen storage materials, making it a potentially cost-effective solution for hydrogen storage and transport.
Benefit to Warfighter/Customer:
Along with the hydrogen storage capabilities for commercial uses, Alane can also be used as a fuel in solid rocket propellants. Alane can boost Isp values for these propellants leading to applications in both the military and civilian space.
