Job Description

Physical Science’s High-Power Microwaves (HPM) group seeks an experienced radiofrequency (RF) engineer to conduct both R&D and product development of innovative directed energy technologies, including: high-power broadband antennas, HPM source development, lightweight transmission line circuits, novel dielectric materials, metamaterials, pulsed-power systems, and low-SWAP counter-electronic directed energy systems. Our team is cross-disciplinary and focused on combining RF expertise with cutting edge thermal, material, and manufacturing techniques to generate innovative solutions to complex microwave system problems. The new candidate will assist the team in deploying HPM directed energy systems for both counter unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) and vehicle/vessel engine stopping missions.

PSI currently seeks an individual with strong educational and profession experience in RF system engineering, manufacturing, and testing. A solid understanding of theoretical concepts and first principals is a must, as well as the ability to work independently. The ideal candidate will be multi-disciplinary, with strong abilities in systems engineering. This individual will be expected to interact across all engineering disciplines (RF, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing etc.) and develop technology at all stages of development (early stage research  TRL 5-10 late stage development).

Duties:
• Design, rapid prototype, build, troubleshoot, and maintain RF test stands to measure RF power, frequency, phase and coupling
• Design and simulate novel antenna and transmission line architectures
• Support mechanical engineers with design-for-manufacture of antennas, transmission lines, and RF source concepts
• Assist system engineers and business development team members with proposal writing by generating new directed energy system concepts
• Assist electrical engineers with integration of pulsed-power and system control electronics into HPM directed energy systems
• Conduct anechoic chamber and free-space tests of both antennas and full HPM directed energy systems

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a similar field required. PhD or MS with experience (3+ years) desired.
• Highly proficient in using RF test and measurement equipment including VNAs, spectrum analyzers, high/low speed oscilloscopes, signal generators, and power meters
• Strong knowledge of common RF components such as circulators, loads, attenuators, solid-state amplifiers, mixers, gain horns, coaxial components, and splitters
• Strong theoretical understanding of RF test and measurement principles
• Strong documentation skills. Good written and oral communication skills.
• Organized and capable of working independently
• Leadership skills to manage junior engineers and coordinate large technical efforts
• US Citizenship required

Desired Skills:
• Knowledge of fabrication and assembly techniques for antennas and transmission line components
• Experience with RF data acquisition and Python/Matlab/Excel post-processing tools
• Experience with operation, design and integration of magnetron sources and waveguide systems. Experience with magnetic circuit design.
• Experience with pulsed-power devices and high-voltage safety
• Strong ability in mechanical engineering for laboratory prototype assembly and fabrication. Experience with laboratory cooling systems and electronics.
• Working knowledge and experience with RF simulation software such as CST Microwave Studio or HFSS
• PCB design experience, comfortable using Altium

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to their race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
