Physical Sciences Inc., an employee-owned company, located 25 miles north of Boston in Andover MA, is seeking an experienced and motivated Principal RF Engineer to support the research, development, and deployment of cutting-edge technologies including directed energy systems, novel microwave phase shifters, deployable phased array space antennas, and hypersonic antennas. A solid understanding of theoretical concepts and first principles is a must, as well as the ability to work independently. The ideal candidate will be multi-disciplinary, with strong abilities in systems engineering.

The candidate will help design and build advanced RF systems including:

  • Broadband and narrowband antenna systems
  • High temperature phased array antennas
  • Phase shifters and lightweight transmission lines
  • Novel RF sources
  • Fully integrated counter-electronic directed energy systems

Applications include counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) and vehicle/vessel engine stopping technologies, as well as high temperature antennas for missiles and hypersonic vehicles. The role offers a hands-on opportunity to work on real-world, field-deployable systems across all development phases, from early R&D through product development.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, prototype, and maintain RF test platforms
  • Simulate and develop novel antenna and transmission line architectures
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers on design for manufacturing antennas and RF components
  • Support integration of RF sources and pulsed power systems into HPM prototypes
  • Conduct and interpret anechoic chamber and free-space measurements
  • Assist system engineers and business development teams in generating new technical proposals and system concepts
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers while managing multi-disciplinary technical efforts

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field (MS or PhD strongly preferred)
  • At least 6 years of hands-on experience in RF system design, test, and integration
  • Highly proficient in using RF test equipment: VNAs, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and power meters
  • Deep understanding of RF theory and first principles, including components like circulators, amplifiers, mixers, phase shifters and phased-array antennas
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and across engineering disciplines

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience with antenna and transmission line fabrication techniques as well as antenna characterization
  • Familiarity with RF data acquisition and post-processing tools
  • Experience measuring the complex permittivity of solid and liquid dielectric materials
  • Magnetic circuit design and knowledge of ferrimagnetic materials
  • Mechanical prototyping and lab system assembly experience (cooling systems, enclosures, electronics)
  • Proficiency in RF simulation tools such as CST Microwave Studio, HFSS, or COMSOL
  • PCB design and layout experience (e.g. Altium)

U.S. Citizenship is required.
