Press Release
Physical Sciences Inc. has been recognized as a leader in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs since their inception. Our company has consistently provided solutions for a broad range of commercial and government technology needs, in fields ranging from state-of-the-art military sensors to advanced batteries and high-temperature composites. All these technologies owe their genesis to the SBIR and STTR programs.
Bipartisan action to reauthorize these competitive awards through 2031 is another testament to the crucial role these programs play in incubating some of the most innovative ideas and encouraging small businesses and research universities to break new bounds that sharpen America’s technical edge.
PSI applauds leaders of both parties for coming together, after months of difficult negotiations, to enact reforms that we are confident will protect American ingenuity, expand opportunities, and retain the merit-based principles that have been the bedrock of these programs since their inception, more than four decades ago.
We especially thank Senator Edward Markey, the ranking member of the Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee, for his steadfast support over the past five months for small businesses in Massachusetts and beyond that the government has relied upon to solve some of the toughest and most unique technological challenges. Senator Markey listened to the concerns of all small businesses involved in the programs and played a crucial leadership role in ensuring that the principles that have made these investments so impactful were not undermined.
PSI’s SBIR-funded work has led directly to a range of innovative technologies and systems that strengthen our law enforcement agencies, equip our armed forces, and have transitioned into wider commercial applications. Most recently, we invested in a 67,400-square-foot battery manufacturing facility to scale up the production of advanced battery technologies for national defense systems. This reauthorization of SBIR and STTR provides us with the confidence to continue to invest in new infrastructure to transition more capabilities that meet the unique needs of the Departments of War and Homeland Security.
With the SBIR and STTR programs back up and running, PSI is eager to double down on our leadership role to strengthen America’s innovation pipeline and bring to market the technologies that will help maintain our competitive edge and protect our national security for years to come.
