General Purpose

Maturing our technologies into products that we or our licensed partners can manufacture and sell directly to customers is an important part of our business.

Our diversified array of equipment to support sensor design and testing, systems analysis, modeling, and experimental research efforts ensure that our products succeed in the most demanding environments.

Our design efforts are supported by ZEMAX, SolidWorks, commercial software packages which facilitate CFD Calculations, E&M simulation, and CAD/CAM prototyping capabilities.

Our machine shop enables rapid prototyping of mechanical equipment and components. Machine tools include:

  • Hardinge HLV-H precision toolroom lathe
  • Clausing Metosa C1440 geared head engine lathe
  • Two Bridgeport Series II J Head vertical milling machine
  • Trak DPM3 CNC bed milling machine
  • TESA-HITE 400 height gauge

Chemistry

The development and demonstration of critical system components to enhance mission performance, safety and sustainability of strategic and tactical systems is a core focus within solid rocket motor research.

Our staff of chemists and materials scientists have significant experience in the development of materials with new properties from the molecular to the macroscopic scales.

Materials

PSI has significant experience with fabrication of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) products and components using both vapor phase (CVI) and pre-ceramic polymer impregnation and pyrolysis processing (PIP) routes.

Roll to roll processing is a continuous, low cost manufacturing method used to make materials ranging from newspapers to flexible circuits to polymer photovoltaic cells.

PSI’s staff is experienced at characterizing and developing new batteries and materials for electrochemical applications. PSI’s laboratories allow for the preparation and characterization of new materials.

Sensors

Extensive laser, optics, electronics, and sample handling capabilities support biomedical optics development in multiple laboratories. In particular, a wide range of mode-locked lasers and associated test equipment across the visible and near-IR spectral ranges support OCT-related programs.

We combine scientific and engineering skills with knowledge of industrial sensor requirements to design and engineer robust sensors for simple and reliable operation in demanding environments. We build one-of-a-kind custom sensor units and sensors intended for limited production, and we complete pilot production of sensors intended for volume manufacturing.

Four PSI laboratories support capabilities related to integrated optics and include a wide variety of laser, optical, and electronic test equipment from the UV through to the Far-IR.

PSI’s vertically integrated knowledge of physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry, when coupled to our knowledge of optical and nuclear physics and spectroscopy, provides a unique capability for CBRNE sensor development.
