Optical Communications

PSI has extensive experience in developing nonlinear optical devices for all-optical telecommunications functions, including wavelength conversion, dispersion compensation, modulation, and switching. The high conversion efficiency, broad bandwidth, high damage threshold, and coherent nature of the novel bulk and waveguide materials that we fabricate (including periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate and congruent lithium niobate) make them ideally suited for demanding communications systems throughout the ultraviolet, visible, near infrared, and mid-infrared wavelength regions. PSI fiber pigtailing capability also allows us to deliver robust components that can be quickly incorporated into existing optical fiber communications systems.

With its background in the far-infrared terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers, PSI is working on nontraditional carriers of optical information by developing hybrid tranceivers that transmit and receive high speed optical information encoded on a THz carrier.
