High Energy Lasers (HEL)

Researchers at PSI are involved in the development of several High Energy Laser (HEL) sources, including Chemical Oxygen Iodine Lasers (COIL), Electric Oxygen Iodine Lasers (EOIL), micro-COIL, and Diode Pumped Alkali Lasers (DPAL). These lasers produce near to mid-IR output and can be operated as high power laser systems for directed energy applications. PSI’s research encompasses a wide variety of disciplines including chemical kinetics, spectroscopy, atomic and molecular interactions, and fluid flow dynamics. In addition PSI is developing advanced gas phase meta-stable energy sources and is developing ultra-sensitive diagnostics for understanding the performance of HEL devices. Our tunable diode laser absorption and gain spectroscopy laser diagnostics are used world-wide and include the development of imaging TDLAS systems.
