The use of lasers to measure the quantity or properties of trace gases, liquids, and solids is a fundamental technology base that permeates many of PSI's R&D activities, as well as product sales and commercial spin-offs. Our staff contributes to basic understanding of the absorption of laser light by specific molecules or materials, builds complete laboratory systems for specific measurement goals, and adapts this technology to autonomous platforms under the oceans, in industrial environments, and in space. Increasingly, we are also developing laser technology specifically targeted for sensor applications in frequency ranges from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared.
