MissionThe mission of the Energy Technologies Group is to develop advanced materials and processes that can be leveraged for improvements in energy generation, storage and distribution. Our focus is on improvements to lithium ion battery performance as a source of portable power that addresses the needs of industrial and national defense communities.
Core CompetenciesCore competencies include materials characterization and electrochemical evaluation, battery construction and testing, and innovative problem solving. The Energy Technologies Group personnel skills include materials science, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical design. Current Research Thrusts Include:
- Sponsor: DOE - Objective: Develop a lithium ion battery separator that provides control for overcharging by reversibly switching from an insulator to a conductor. - Sponsor: DARPA/Army - Objectives: Develop lithium ion batteries based on a three dimensional electrode architecture in which anode, electrolyte and cathode are a co continuous network. - Sponsor: ONR - Objectives: Develop a multifunctional battery that provides high rate capability, ability to be fabricated in various shapes, and has load carrying capability. Area Leadership
The Energy Technologies Area is led by Dr. Aron Newman Dr. Newman has over a decade of experience developing alkaline and lithium ion battery technology for commercial and defense applications.
