Core Competencies

Core competencies include materials characterization and electrochemical evaluation, battery construction and testing, and innovative problem solving. The Energy Technologies Group personnel skills include materials science, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical design.

Current Research Thrusts Include:
  • Electroactive Polymer Separator to Protect From Overcharging in Lithium Ion Batteries:

  • - Sponsor: DOE

    - Objective: Develop a lithium ion battery separator that provides control for overcharging by reversibly switching from an insulator to a conductor.

  • High Power 3-D Batteries for Autonomous Sensor Networks

  • - Sponsor: DARPA/Army

    - Objectives: Develop lithium ion batteries based on a three dimensional electrode architecture in which anode, electrolyte and cathode are a co continuous network.

  • Structural Lithium Ion Battery

  • - Sponsor: ONR

    - Objectives: Develop a multifunctional battery that provides high rate capability, ability to be fabricated in various shapes, and has load carrying capability.
