PSI conducts wide range of R&D in application to space exploration. On notable example is development of a unique solar power system for material processing and plant lighting in space. PSI has been developing the Optical Waveguide (OW) solar power system in application to lunar material processing including oxygen production, surface stabilization and construction material fabrication. In near space application, PSI is developing a new type of electric thruster called Pulsed ElectroGasdynamic (PEG) thruster for spacecraft attitude control and orbit changing. The PEG thruster has unique characteristics to generate in a wide thrust level at high specific Impulse (Isp). PSI personnel in Space Exploration Technologies area is working on development of photovoltaic power system for very small satellites including CubeSats.
