Biomedical Imaging

Mission

The mission of the Biomedical Imaging group is to develop innovative biomedical optical systems for use by researchers, clinicians, and other medical personnel in the detection of diseases, the discovery of novel therapies, and greater understanding of the human body from system and organ to sub-cellular and molecular structures. We perform research and development in a wide variety of interdisciplinary programs for the NIH, DoD, and other government and commercial organizations. Some of our work is built on our core competencies in ophthalmology including the development of:

Ophthalmic imaging instruments developed by the Biomedical Imaging Group.

Our retinal tracking ocular interface is currently being sold to researchers interested in functional imaging, SLO, OCT, adaptive optics, multi-focal ERG, low vision studies, etc. We are also engaged in projects that use optics for imaging and therapies for other non-ophthalmic applications, including the development of:

  • Full-field endoscopic optical coherence microscopy
  • Fine needle aspiration biopsy for cancer screening of adipose tissues (e.g., breast)
  • Zebrafish imaging for angiogenesis and drug discovery studies
  • Polarization imaging of enzymatic activity
  • OCT-guided laser ablation therapies for pancreatic cancer
  • Advanced three-dimensional tracking systems
  • Optical diffuse tomography for neuro-imaging
  • Swept source Fourier domain OCT systems.

Dr. Nicusor Iftimia

Since receiving his Ph.D. in 1996  Dr. Nicusor Iftimia has developed a broad scientific background in optical imaging that includes various technologies: near-infrared spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography, laser-induced fluorescence imaging, endoscopic confocal microscopy, and spectrally encoded confocal microscopy.

Since joining PSI in 2004 Dr. Iftimia has focused on development of novel optical imaging technologies for cancer diagnosis in the gastrointestinal tract, breast, urology, and gynecology. In recent years Dr. Iftimia has conceived several key pieces of intellectual property that will enable more efficient diagnosis of epithelial cancers, cystic cancers of the pancreas, as well as for field diagnosis of military personnel with severe brain injuries.

Dr. Iftimia is author of over 40 peer-review publications, several book chapters, numerous conference papers, and the main editor of a recently published book: Advances in Optical Imaging for Clinical Medicine, Wiley, 2011. Currently, he serves as Group Leader of the Advanced Microscopy and Image Guided Interventions area.
