Abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) and its industrial team member Aerojet, are evaluating a family of novel high-nitrogen heterocyclic plasticizers with low sensitivity, good energy and good density for application to IM compliant propellants for solid rocket motors. PSI synthesized and characterized the novel heterocyclic energetic plasticizer in high purity and good yield. Aerojet evaluated the material properties for sensitivity, density, and chemical behavior. The results indicate that this material is very insensitive to friction, impact, and electrostatic discharge. The plasticizer shows promise to be an IM compliant ingredient superior to current energetic plasticizers (e.g. Butyl NENA) due to chemical differences which reduce sensitivity but which also increase stability.
