NightSea

Specialty

NightSea develops equipment for viewing and imaging fluorescence, developing instrumentation to measure fluorescence and other optical characteristics, as well as conducting research on the optical properties of marine environments.

Overview

It has been known for many years that some undersea creatures, especially corals, will fluoresce when you shine the right light on them. But very few people have actually seen the phenomenon underwater.

NightSea was founded by Dr. Charles Mazel, a Principal Research Scientist at PSI, to provide equipment that enables SCUBA divers to view and photograph fluorescence underwater.

For many, viewing and imaging fluorescence reveal a hidden beauty in the undersea world. For marine scientists, fluorescence is finding application in the study of fluorescent pigments in corals, the search for tiny coral recruits, automated mapping of seafloor life, and the search for novel fluorescent compounds.

Experience

NightSea delivers both off-the-shelf and customized solutions for viewing and imaging underwater fluorescence. Customers include hundreds of sport divers, a number of commercial divers and diving companies, and more than 35 scientific institutions worldwide.
