Detection and analysis of nuclear radiation - including gamma and x-rays, alpha and beta particles, and neutrons - is used to identify radioisotope materials, measure the composition of chemical compounds, detect hidden objects and substances, assess damage in structural materials, characterize radiation sources, and monitor potential radiation hazards. PSI's technology base in this area includes the development and prototyping of semiconductor as well as scintillation detectors designed to provide superior sensitivity, energy resolution, and/or spatial resolution. PSI-developed special-purpose nuclear measurement systems employ passive sensors as well as active interrogation techniques to enable non-intrusive detection and analysis.
