Towed Optical Plume Simulator Emitter Enhancements

Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop and demonstrate/test an infrared (IR) emitter/illuminator that meets both the illumination and environmental requirements of the towed optical plume simulator (TOPS).

This effort supports the development of the TOPS system that is intended to provide the DoD with the capability to accurately simulate missile signatures with independent control of the spectral radiant intensity in the relevant UV, IR-Blue and IR-Red bands as necessary to test advanced infrared countermeasure (IRCM) systems. The technology supports the TAPS program, a key component of the DoD-wide Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program (CTEIP), with the goal of improving Aircraft Survivability through testing of advanced IRCM. The IRCM Test Resource Requirements Study Roadmap requires that the current, pyrophoric combustion-based version of TAPS be augmented by a technology capable of multi-band emission control.
