Reduced Chemical Kinetic Models for Hydrocarbon Fuels
Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI), in collaboration with Spectral Sciences Inc. (SSI), has been awarded a research program from the U.S. Air Force to develop an innovative approach to generating validated models of modern, high pressure liquid rocket engines (LRE).
Models and new experimental data are of interest to the Air Force to fill in the gaps where critical validation data for hydrocarbon combustion is unavailable. During this effort, data will be obtained at relevant LRE conditions by PSI, and will be used to validate reduced chemical kinetic mechanisms developed through a novel coarse graining quasi-steady state mechanism reduction approach developed by SSI.
This collaborative work between PSI and SSI will result in an experimental capability and computational approach to producing validated reduced chemical kinetic models for hydrocarbons relevant to modeling LRE performance. These models can be integrated with existing commercial computational fluid dynamics and chemical kinetic solvers to enable accurate prediction of LRE performance in advance of costly testing and engineering development. This predictive modeling capability will be of interest to the DoD and the broader commercial space industry.
