NARUC and DPU visit PSI Headquarters in Andover, MA

On September 18, 2018, Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI, Andover MA) and Heath Consultants Inc. (Houston TX) hosted representatives of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) at PSI’s Andover, MA headquarters.

PSI and Heath are long-time partners in developing and deploying technologies for natural gas pipeline leak inspection. In 2005, they introduced the industry’s first handheld laser-based tool for routine walking leak survey, the Remote Methane Leak Detector (RMLD®). Over 4000 RMLD® units are now used worldwide. The team demonstrated to the NARUC group new advances in the laser technology that include a next-generation advanced RMLD®, use of the RMLD® to image small gas leaks and provide nearly-instant measurement of gas leak rate, and highly sensitive detectors operating on leak survey vehicles.

Pictured above with the NARUC group is a next-generation RMLD® mounted on a small unmanned aerial vehicle (a drone), also manufactured by PSI in Andover, MA. This combination, known as the RMLD-UAV is intended for inspecting gas wellheads and pipeline infrastructure that is difficult to access. The novel technologies will enhance safety and reduce man-made emissions of methane, the predominant component of natural gas and a significant greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. Technology development was supported in part by research awards from the US Department of Energy (DoE) Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPAe), the DoE Office of Fossil Energy via the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, the US Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and NYSEARCH - the research arm of Northeast Gas Association.
