PSI - Boston, MA
Full-time
Masters

Physical Sciences Inc., located just north of Boston, in Andover, is looking for a chemical scientist to conduct research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) of innovative materials in an experimental work environment. Emphasis is placed on laboratory scale synthesis and pilot scale processing of ingredients and formulations for fuels, oxidizers, binders, polymers, and air-sensitive compounds.

We are seeking an individual with a strong background in wet chemistry and analytical instrumentation to join a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists. This individual will play a key role in growing a diverse portfolio of technologies funded by the DoD, DOE and NASA. This position is focused on chemical synthesis and characterization techniques, which will be applied across a diverse set of hazardous and non-hazardous compounds. This person will advance novel ingredients, coating methods, and formulations by improving their methods of production and performance relative to sensitivity, thermal stability, energetic output, and mechanical properties. This person will also develop polymer binder systems through the production of novel pre-polymers and curatives, and characterization of binders after curing.

Work will be performed at PSI’s headquarters in Andover, MA as well as PSI’s propulsion and energetics testing facility in Epping, NH. In addition, the candidate will also provide support to programs that develop and characterize advanced materials such as smart sorbents and surface functionalized products for multiple applications (atmospheric water extraction, chemical decontamination, electrochemistry, etc.).

The ideal candidate should be familiar with standard chemical characterization techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and digital scanning calorimetry (DSC). Additional experience using bomb calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and/or Instron testing is desired.

A PhD or Master’s degree in chemistry is required.

US Citizenship is required.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to their race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
