Embedded Software Engineer – Unmanned Systems

InstantEye – Boston, MA

InstantEye Robotics, a division of Physical Sciences Inc. located 25 miles north of Boston in Andover, develops and manufactures tactical unmanned aerial systems that are the technology of choice by military, law enforcement, and first responders around the world. It has earned the respect of its customers by delivering high-quality products that are affordable, reliable, and meet current and future mission needs. It is seeking to expand an R&D and production capability that has already delivered over 1,600 unmanned aerial systems across three product lines.

The InstantEye Robotics team has a need for an embedded software engineer who will create and debug software that will directly impact current and future unmanned systems (UAS, UAV, quadcopters, drones etc.) in a fast-paced environment. The development will be focused on flight-critical firmware targeted for execution on core system microcontrollers. Additional development will include multimedia-processing and computer vision software on an embedded Linux platform, as well as UI software on Android.

The candidate will be expected to: Follow standard development processes including version control, write unit tests, perform code reviews, and conduct full system testing, leverage, design, and implement hardware and software APIs, work closely with electrical, aerospace and mechanical engineers in coordinating designs of embedded systems, provide support for production deployments, and demonstrate ability to deliver results on time with high quality.

The desired experience for the position includes: microcontroller development in C/C++; communications protocols (UART, I2C, SPI, USB, Ethernet); controls, state estimation, and system identification; computer vision, machine learning, Qt, OpenCV, ROS; version control: Git, SVN; Android development, C, assembly, and batch scripting; software design patterns and multithreading; electrical engineering skills; robotics hardware development; ability to operate in a fast-paced software development environment on a small team.

Key qualifications include: a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related field with a strong background in software engineering, C++ and object oriented design; experience developing software for robotic systems or remotely operated products; demonstrated ability to effectively work on a small team and apply new technologies quickly; ability, desire, and time to rapidly become familiar with a large C++ code base.

InstantEye Robotics operates in a new, state-of-the-art production and engineering facility specifically designed to support our technical and manufacturing activities.
