X-ray and gamma-ray imaging techniques are used in the diagnosis of internal medical conditions, the treatment of cancers, the characterization of radiation beams, the analysis of surface and sub-surface chemistry in materials, the non-destructive evaluation of components and structures, and the security screening for illicit objects. PSI's technology base in this area includes the development and prototyping of high-resolution gamma cameras and x-ray imaging sensors designed to provide efficient scatter rejection and high image contrast. PSI-developed special-purpose imaging systems employ multi-channel integrated readout electronics as well as computer-based control and image analysis.
