New materials are used in a layered device that changes optical properties with an applied voltage. Called electrochromic devices, these composite materials can change their optical properties across a wide range of transmissivity, reflectivity, or emissivity. PSI is developing devices that are designed to change transmission in the visible, infrared, or microwave frequency ranges. The technologies are being applied to military, aerospace, and commercial markets.
