Passive optical limiters can be used to protect eyes and other optical sensors from laser damage. Solid-state materials utilizing nonlinear absorbing dyes represent a simple, highly effective and low-cost solution. The research effort at PSI includes the development of innovative laser-hardened solid host materials, and also the fabrication and testing of damage-resistant prototype limiter devices.
