Nonlinear optical materials are used to change laser operating wavelengths, convert electrical signals to optical signals, and amplify light. PSI's technology base in this area includes methods for engineering nonlinear optical properties and waveguides in crystalline materials such as periodically-poled lithium niobate, as well as polymer-based laser gain media. These materials are typically integrated within larger PSI-designed systems such as lasers and laser-based sensors.
