Dye lasers are very attractive for a wide range of applications, including selective photothermolysis in medicine, underwater communications, surveillance denial, and where broad tunability or wavelength selectivity is desirable. Wavelengths from the near-UV to the near-IR, pulse durations from femtoseconds up to continuous are available. A solid state host matrix dye laser eliminates the problems of liquid solutions. Various dyes in solid host materials have been developed yielding efficient, long-lived performance, resistant to optical damage.
